What is Gods Love?

This is a question that can’t be easily defined by words alone.

God's love was the motivation and passion for Jesus’ life.

Where the words alone failed to truly express God's love, his life on earth is what finally defined it.

Love is part of God’s character.

God Himself is the very definition of love according to scripture.

The person who doesn’t love doesn’t know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:8 GW)

In Christianity, the Greek word (Agape) is known as the highest form of love.

It’s an unconditional love that extends even beyond emotion or attraction.

Selfless, sacrificial and intentional love.

Agape love cannot be proven by science, but it can be known to humans.

Many believe this type of love is the most powerful force in the universe.

With God’s love being the very source of life and creation itself.

Scripture That Declares Gods Love

There are a lot of religious teachings I’ve had to “unlearn” while spending quality time getting to know God as a good Father.

Healthy theology matters.

Toxic beliefs about scripture have led many to believe God is an angry, dysfunctional man in the sky.

Who is waiting for you to mess up so He can punish you for being the wretched human he created in his image.

He is a holy and righteous God.

His ways are not our ways.

Yes, He used some extreme measures recorded in the Old Testament.

However, we now live in the New Testament Covenant, where Jesus fulfilled the law, and His way is GRACE, not wrath.

“But God demonstrated his own love for us in this: While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 NIV)

As humans, we need a way to measure the good from bad and the darkness from light.

Being able to understand and measure what the “curse of the law” looks like in some instances in the Old Testament, breaks open our understanding.

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23 KJV)

Let’s look at some more scriptures that reveals God is a good Father.

A new song for a new day rises up in me every time I think about how he breaks through for me! Ecstatic praise pours out of my mouth until everyone hears how God has set me free, Many will see his miracles; they’ll stand in awe of God and fall in love with him!

Psalm 40:3 TPT

We know how much God loves us because we have felt his love and because we believe him when he tells us that he loves us dearly. God is love, and anyone who lives in love is living with God and God is living in him.

1 John 4:16 TLB

The Lord nurses them when they are sick
and restores them to health. Psalm 41:3 NLT

I will give you back your health
and heal your wounds,” says the Lord. Jeremiah 30:17 NIV

Though the mountains be shaken
and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken
nor my covenant of peace be removed,”
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

Isaiah 54:10 NIV

Gods Love & What He Thinks About You

Religion has shamed you for simply being human.

It makes you strive for acceptance and believe that God only tolerates those he made in his image.

But what does God have to say about you?

“The Lord your God is in your midst,

a mighty one who will save;

he will rejoice over you with gladness;

he will quiet you by his love;

he will exult over you with loud singing.”

(Zephaniah 3:17 ESV)

God's love is evident in so many ways, but He will never force his love on people.

We must dare to believe that it’s true. Because He declared it, and he cannot lie.

If we intentionally choose to partner with the truth that he delights in us, it begins to reshape our world and transform our minds.

The fact that he desires friendship with us, infuriates the religious mind.

When was the last time you thought to yourself, have I been a good friend to God?

He is after the love of your heart, not your perfection.

He pursues you and desires friendship with you.

It brings Him great joy and delight.

It’s easy to forget that God has emotions and can feel your love in return.

The Lord himself is moved to compassion, he cries, sings, mourns, and laughs.

Understanding that God can feel deeply challenges our understanding of what He thinks about us.

Gods Love & How to Talk to Him Like a Friend

Breaking what I call the language barrier with God is one of the most important parts of relationship.

I had no idea how to talk to God when I started attending church many years ago. The reason?

Probably because I believed you couldn’t just talk to him.

This confusion came from a bad experience after the first time I got “real” with him in a conversation.

Later I realized it was more of a me screaming at God type of talk.

Along with some threats made.

Like this…

“God, I’m walking away from you if you don’t [fill in the blank] for me!”

This was my attempt to manipulate my way out of a bad situation.

Let’s just say things got much worse before they got better afterward.

This was a lesson that would change my life as I grew and matured as his daughter.

Finally surrendered to his plan and believing he had my back, I could say this in times of uncertainty...

You are God, and I am not.

Suffering is a part of our journey.

We can walk through it with emotional stability and trust.

Or kicking and screaming our way through the trials of life.

Whichever we decide to choose, he is still in us and with us.

Truly getting uncomfortably honest with him is the same way you would with a loved one.

You would do it with a level of honor, respect, and openness.

Whatever that looks like for you, remember to be wholeheartedly and unapologetically YOU when talking to him.

He doesn’t expect repentance for your personality!

God doesn’t just love you. He actually LIKES you too.

The Art of Listening

At the end of this post, I'll walk you through a short exercise to practice talking to God and hearing his response.

Learning to hear his voice may feel stressful in the beginning.

Your mind may want to take over.

Unhealthy thoughts might make you believe things that are not true. Things like this:

  • Why can't I hear him? There must be something wrong with me.

  • He does not speak to me like he does to others.

  • God is mad at me and does not love me enough to answer.

  • It is probably wrong to listen to his voice directly.

All of the above can absolutely hinder your ability to hear.

Listening takes practice!

He wants to grow you in this area so you know how to discern what His voice is and what it is not.

Jesus said, my sheep hear and follow my voice.

They do not follow the voice of another.

We have not consistently learned the art of listening and hearing him for ourselves.

It is time to start practicing because good friends are good listeners.

Declaring That You Are His Son or Daughter

Learning to be a son or daughter takes practice as well.

Especially if you’ve been through trauma and pain.

It’s hard to believe you are worthy of love.

But God says you are worthy. All throughout scripture.

The life and sacrifice of Jesus prove this is true for you, too.

If you follow him, you are his, and he is yours.

Our words, declarations, and beliefs matter.

Here are some daily declarations you can speak over yourself:

  • I am a daughter of the Most High.

  • God calls me his intimate friend.

  • I open my heart to be vulnerable and receive the love God has for me, just as I am.

  • He declared me worthy of his restoration and transformation.

  • As a child of the King, I lack nothing, and all my needs are met.

  • I am loved and treasured by my Father in Heaven.

If it is hard believing these things about yourself, speaking them in faith and agreeing with what God does will begin a renewal of old thoughts and beliefs.

A renewed mind takes time to develop and grow.

This is how your voice activates change.

Jesus understood this truth about the power in our voice.

5 Minute Activation & Journal Prompt

Grab your journal and pen for this quick (but powerful) exercise.

Tune out any distractions.

If you could tell God one thing right now what would it be?

Would you thank him for anything?

Maybe you want to express to him something that hurt you.

Journal it down now.

Now, ask Him this question;

Lord, is there anything you want to share with me about your love today?

After you write this down, close your eyes and be still for at least a few minutes.

→ Pay close attention to what you feel, see, hear, or sense.

Write down anything that comes to your mind.

It can be colors, sensations, scents, or sounds.

Sometimes God will speak to you in different ways.

Now ask Him, Lord, are there any toxic beliefs I have about you that is stopping me from receiving your unconditional love?

List anything He brings to your mind.

When finished, write down every toxic belief or lie you have, then write the opposite.

Example: If you believe He is angry with you, write, “You are never angry with your sons & daughters. I am loved and totally forgiven!

When you’re finished, read all of the “true” statements out loud. You can read these truths every day for as long as needed.

You may hear his answer in your spirit or through words jumping out on a page. There is no wrong way to hear his voice. He will make it unique to you because he knows everything about you.

Practice this activation as many times as you want to. You can ask him a new question each day. Or share whatever is on your heart.

Bless him with your honesty and authenticity.

Don’t be discouraged if you do not hear every time. He wants to build a hunger inside of you, patience, and endurance while you grow in this area.

“For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things.” Psalm 107:9 ESV
